Services

The CER provides a variety of services for faculty in the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences and the Whiting School of Engineering.  CER staff members meet with faculty to discuss digital course enhancements, manage the Technology Fellowship Program, collaborate with faculty on grant projects, and offer structured opportunities for faculty to learn about cutting edge educational innovations.

To request a consultation with a CER staff member or to get more information on our services, please call 410-516-7181 or email cerweb@jhu.edu.

Pedagogical and Technology Consulting

CER staff members are available to offer pedagogical and technology consulting to the faculty and graduate TAs of the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences and the Whiting School of Engineering.  If you are interested in exploring new instructional technologies or teaching strategies into your courses, CER staff can help you:

  • Clarify the learning goals of your course and link them to measurable student performance
  • Evaluate various instructional technologies and teaching strategies that will help achieve those learning goals
  • Design learning activities and assessments
  • Evaluate the impact of the instructional technologies and teaching strategies on your courses

We also provide customized instruction and consultation for groups of faculty, TAs and departments.

TA Training Institute

The Teaching Assistant Training Institute provides formal training for graduate students to assist them in preparing for their teaching assignments both here at Johns Hopkins and for their future academic careers. The program consists of a half-day orientation session for new TAs as well as workshops throughout the year for all graduate students. There is also a formal course to prepare graduate students for academic teaching. The TA Training Institute consists of a Director - Richard Shingles, a Senior Instructional Designer – Macie Hall, and Graduate Teaching Associates. The Institute works with the support of staff members in the Center for Educational Resources, the GRO, graduate liaisons and MSEL staff.

Instruction and Workshops

Our “Bits and Bytes” series provides a relaxed opportunity for faculty and TAs to explore innovative teaching tools and strategies.  These hour-long sessions include a brief presentation and an opportunity for participants to casually discuss the implications of a particular tool on their classes.

View our schedule of offerings and register for events on our Events page.

Project Management

The CER partners with faculty to manage educational grant projects. Some projects are underwritten by resources internal to the University; others are supported by outside funding sources.

For more information about grant projects managed by the CER, visit the Projects page.

Course Resource Development

From helping faculty determine how best to engage students to helping them organize and prepare materials, CER staff members work collaboratively with KSAS and WSE faculty to suggest how best to use technology to enhance their instruction.

The CER offers faculty in-house custom-designed tools, consultation on using existing and/or proprietary resources, and ideas for developing new, faculty-inspired materials.

WebCT Training and Support

Several resources are in place to support faculty using our course management system, WebCT. Whether you are a faculty member considering WebCT for the first time or an experienced user curious about the new version upgrade, we are sure you will find the support you need.

Grant Writing Collaboration

The CER can assist faculty in their preparation of grant proposals by suggesting activities and providing language on instructional design and technology integration in the educational outreach sections of funding opportunities.

To discuss ways the CER can support faculty with their grant projects, contact Candice Dalrymple, Associate Dean of University Libraries and Director, Center for Educational Resources.

Faculty Multimedia Lab Facilities

The CER provides access to, and training on,  faculty multimedia lab facilities.  The lab enables faculty and TAs to scan slides and other images, create audio and video files, CD-ROMs, DVDs, and more.  CER staff are available for assistance and one on one training upon request.

To ensure sufficient technical support, faculty must reserve  equipment ahead of time.  Visit our equipment reservations page to see the equipment in the CER facility and make a reservation.
